SONGWE’S WOES ENTER WEEK 6

Eagles on redemption mission

-Civo, Tigers on the road

Desperate situations require desperate measures and that’s exactly what early strugglers Songwe Boarder United have done. In their pursuit to preserve their Super League status, the Karonga based side has moved in to replace head coach Enoch Mhone with the experienced Christopher Nyambose as Mhone has now been demoted to the position of assistant coach entering into week six of action in the 2025 season.

And Nyambose’s first match in charge comes up on Sunday as the Boarder boys travel to Mzuzu to face Mzuzu City Hammers at Mzuzu City.

But before that, there are two fixtures 24 hours earlier.

Straight from a humiliating 2-0 home defeat at the hands of rivals Civo United, Blue Eagles are back in action on Saturday, this time on the road as they travel up north to face Moyale Barracks.

During last weekend’s defeat, Head Coach Eliah Kananji faced widespread criticism from some section of the team’s supporters who argued that the gaffer is putting his trust in most of the team’s tired legs instead of going for fresh blood a development the supporters feel is costing the team points.

This Saturday Kananji faces a resilient Moyale yet to lose at home this season and if Kananji is to get the much needed maximum points, he will have to ring radical changes to the team that gave out a below par performance against Civo.

For Moyale, they return to action after missing out on action last weekend as the Lions of Kaning’ina were exempted from action following the sudden death of the team’s first choice goalkeeper Simeon Harawa.

A win for Moyale will see them move top of the log table with 10 points as league leaders FCB Nyasa Big Bullets are not in action this weekend.

Interestingly a Blue Eagles win will also see them move top of the log table as they too have amassed 7 points so far.

Saturdays’ other fixture involves the struggling Mighty Tigers who are on the road to Karonga Stadium to face Karonga United.

Things are not looking all good for the Kau Kau boys as they lie on position 15 having played 5 games, winning one and losing the other four.

For Karonga they come into this match with a perfect record.

Oscar Kaunda’s boys occupy position 8 with 6 points from 2 games and a win on Saturday will see them move up the log table into the top 4 regardless of results elsewhere.

Sunday’s attention will be on new man in the dugout Christopher Nyambose as he leads out his bottom placed Songwe Boarder United at Mzuzu Stadium where they face Mzuzu City Hammers.

Nyambose has inherited a team rooted at the bottom without a point after 4 games and carry with them a -13 goal difference.

Surely Nyambose has a mammoth task of salvaging this sinking ship otherwise relegation would even be confirmed before the end of the first round if something drastic is not done.

For Hammers, this fixture presents them with a perfect opportunity to hit the ground running having started the season on a low winning just one and losing two.

Currently they occupy 14th place, a position that speaks to the opposite of their last season’s accomplishments in which they managed to finish on position 4.

Action this weekend concludes with a tie involving position 11 and 12.

12th placed Chitipa United welcomes Civil United who are buoyed by that first win of the season (0-2 over Blue Eagles).

Civo coach Abbas Makawa was increasingly becoming under pressure following a string of poor results in the opening fixtures and last Sunday’s victory over neighbours Blue Eagles might have just temporarily eased that pressure.

Makawa’s hope will be that his boys build on that strong performance and now start getting results for the team to move closer to the top 4.

For Chitipa United, a win would see them move up to position 5 but their inconsistencies this season is the great injustice they have been doing to themselves as in 4 games they have only won once, drawn once and lost twice.

The season has now started taking shape

SOS’s are being sounded

Is Christopher Nyambose the right man to save the sinking Songwe Boarder?

Action in Week 6 continues in midweek but by that time we might have a new league leader depending on results this weekend.
