BLESSED FOR THE BIG GAMES

Wanderers’ Mwalilino talks of early life settlement at Lali Lubani

For any player dreaming of playing in the tnm Super League, it is no secret that their dream teams in the elite league are the three domestic powerhouses in Mighty Wanderers, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Silver Strikers.

It is therefore not surprising that during each and every transfer window, these three giants are the busiest on the market making reinforcements in their weakest departments with a goal of competing at the highest level in the new season.

So, when a Wanderers, Bullets or Silver Strikers call come, rarely do players think twice before jumping on such a golden opportunity.

So, for the 2025 season transfer window, a call came to one then little-known Blessings Mwalilino who was playing for Karonga United.

Despite netting an impressive 11 goals for his side Karonga United, Mwalilino was not a household name of domestic football but that story would immediately change the moment he accepted the call to join Blantyre giants Mighty Wanderers.

In just five games he has played against (Tigers, Silver, Blue Eagles, Mafco and Bullets) this far, Mwalilino has earned himself praises for being the man of the big occasions scoring vital goals against defending Champions Silver Strikers and last Saturday’s lone strike against rivals FCB Nyasa Big Bullets made him hero of the day.

The Sulom Media took time and had a chat with the forward to appreciate how is he adapting to life at Lali Lubani and as well his future ambitions as a player;

 How are you settling in at Wanderers?

I am settling down well. When I arrived in Blantyre I thought it would be a challenge considering where I am coming from and also Wanderers being one of the biggest clubs in Malawi but to my surprise the reception was good and I am having wonderful time at the club together with my fellow players including the supporters

 Scoring in big games back-to-back how motivating has this been?

It has been a very good motivation that everything is possible. It’s something that I never imagined but am happy to have contributed to the success of my club in those two games. Actually, the belief in myself has doubled after scoring in those two matches because those teams are part of the powerhouses in Malawi football and scoring against them has made me realize the potential that I have and the endless possibilities that are there in football if you can just believe in yourself.

How did you feel scoring in your maiden derby?

I was so excited being my maiden derby. Also playing before such a crowd, it’s not easy. Special mention should go to my wife. She called and prayed with me before the derby. She told me you will score during then derby and it turned out that I contributed the lone goal of the match. I would also like to thank my coach who believed that I can contribute something if featured in that game. Also, my fellow players whom we encouraged one another that guys we can do it. To the fans also for giving us support so that we do well on the pitch

What’s your target as a player?

I aim to earn a golden boot at the end of the season. Last season in my maiden super league appearance with Karonga United, I had eleven goals. I believe I can build on that and be a top goal scorer. I know we have quality strikers in the league, some are leading currently but I believe with much effort, I can pull wonders as well

  Your best friend at Wanderers?

Blessings Nyekez Singini
