-Wanderers eye continued dominance
-As Bullets seek revenge
A distance of over 300 kilometres separate Malawi’s commercial capital Blantyre and the Administrative capital Lilongwe.
But that distance is set to be narrowed this coming Sunday as Blantyre’s age old football rivals Mighty Wanderers and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets clash in the 2026 FDH Bank premiership season at the Bingu National stadium.
For most Blantyre based football fans who would not make it to Lilongwe, their body might be in Blantyre but the mind and soul will surely be in Lilongwe, keenly following events as they will be unfolding in this Sunday late kick off fixture.
This is no ordinary domestic fixture.
This is a fixture that has claimed lives before.
A fixture that has divided families and friendships.
This Sunday’s fixture also has its own catalyst.
FCB Nyasa Big Bullets who for over five years have dominated this fixture will walk into the pitch with one mission in mind; reclaiming their lost glory having succumbed to a league double loss last season in fixtures they failed to find the back of the net on both occasions.
Coach Gilbert Chirwa must surely be thinking of how to develop a winning formula as it is now clear that the Lali Lubani boys have mastered their noisy neighbours’ game plan.
If Bullets must get a result, it will need their star players to rise to the occasion and do the job.
It wont be easy though as they face a Wanderers side enjoying some derby moments to savour having already beaten their rivals 1-0 in this season’s curtain raiser match.
Coach Bob Mpinganjira having been a derby victim for so long seem now to have had enough and now knows who to unleash and when for him to get a result in Malawi’s most anticipated football fixture.
So its week three, but the Blantyre derby is already before us.
For Mighty Wanderers, it will be a statement that they are in town to defend the championship they won last season after almost half a decade.
As for Bullets, their statement will be that of a wound buffalo who is out to reclaim what once belonged to them.
In this weekend’s other fixtures starting with Saturday; Mafco FC faces Creck sporting at Champion stadium in Mponela while Civil Service United welcome the winless Ekhaya FC who have now suspended head coach Enos Chatama.
