Mzuzu City Hammers stunned Moyale Barracks on Wednesday afternoon, clinching a crucial 2-0 victory in the highly anticipated Mzuzu City Derby at Rumphi Stadium. The win not only earned them local bragging rights but also brought an end to Moyale’s unbeaten start to the 2025 TNM Super League season.
Despite their poor form—just four points from their opening six matches—the team showed renewed spirit and tactical discipline.
Early Lead Sets the Tone
It took just three minutes for the Hammers to take the lead. Moyale defender Lovemore Jere failed to clear his lines, and Moses Gwayi capitalized, firing home to give the hosts an early advantage. Moyale responded with intent, dominating possession and creating chances, but forwards Clever Kalambo and Chimwemwe Kashoti were guilty of wasting key opportunities.
Clinical Finish, Solid Defence
The Hammers doubled their lead in the 32nd minute after a well-executed team move. Samson Olatubosun linked up brilliantly with Jeremiah Kanyika, who calmly slotted past the Moyale goalkeeper to make it 2-0. Kanyika nearly made it three moments later with a thunderous strike, but the Moyale shot-stopper was equal to the task.
Despite the two-goal deficit, Moyale showed resilience in the second half. Head coach Prichard Mwansa introduced Black Aliseni and Lesman Singini for Maneno Nyoni and Jimmy Viyuyu, hoping to turn the tide. The changes added urgency to their play, but the Hammers remained resolute in defence.
Interim coach Nyoni also made tactical substitutions, bringing on Erick Kaonga and Mustafa Maulana for Kanyika and Arnold Phiri to manage the game and preserve the lead.
League Implications
The victory lifts Mzuzu City Hammers out of the relegation zone to 13th place with 7 points, while Moyale Barracks, suffering their first defeat of the season, remain in 6th position with 13 points from 8 games.
With Moyale’s unbeaten run now broken, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers become the only undefeated team in the league, having won 6 and drawn 1 from their 7 matches.
