Transfer Market Overview
The transfer market this year has been a mixed bag. Some clubs have aggressively pursued reinforcements, while others have opted to maintain squads that served them well in 2024.
Newcomers Ekhaya FC have been one of the big money spenders this transfer window, signing 15 new players, with a strong focus on attack. Manager Enos Chatama has brought in five forwards among them former Civil and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets striker Emmanuel Saviel as well as former Blue Eagles, Silver and Civo attacker Christopher Gototo to bolster their attacking options. Chatama has also reinforced his midfield by signing former Bangwe FC Midfielder Innocent Msowoya as well as former FCB Nyasa Big Bullets Stanley Biliati.
Another new team, Songwe Boarder United from the Northern Region, has strengthened their midfield, bringing in 13 players ahead of their top-flight debut. The debutants have also made 2 signings to their goalkeeping department, 4 defenders as well as 4 strikers. In total they have signed 24 players making them the busiest team of this transfer market.
Making a return to the top flight league, Blue Eagles FC has shown trust in the squad that earned them promotion from the Central Region Chipiku Stores premier division league adding just 7 players having lost defender Andrew Juvinala to FCB Nyasa Big Bullets. The Police sponsored side has mainly focused on adding numbers to its midfield department signing 2 midfielders and welcoming back Christopher John Banda,2 Defenders, 1 striker and 1 Goalkeeper to replace Flames International Brighton Munthali who switched allegiance by joining CRECK Sporting Club.
Creck Sporting, fresh from a successful debut season, has also made several signings, with 13 new players joining the squad, notably strengthening the midfield and attack under the guidance of Coach Joseph Kamwendo. Former Mighty Wanderers attacker Mischeck Bottoman has joined the Lilongwe outfit alongside another former Mighty Wanderers player defender Miracle Gabeya. Defending champions, Silver Strikers, have been more passive in their dealings, showing confidence in the squad that delivered their long-awaited title after 11 years. New Head Coach Peter Mgangira has made five additions with the highlight of it all being the signing of enterprising attacker Festus Duwe from Ascent Academy who played on loan at cross-city rivals Civo FC last season. Aside Duwe, Mgangira has added 1 more attacker in the name of Emmanuel Allan,2 Midfielders and 1 defender.
Meanwhile last season’s runners up Mighty Wanderers, who were one of the busiest teams on the market in 2024, have been quieter this time, bringing in just 5 players top on the list being former Dedza United Forward Promise Kamwendo as well as Mzuzu City Hammers Goalkeeper Chancy Mtete who replaced Flames International William Thole who left the club for Zimbabwe.
The Nomads’ rivals FCB Nyasa Big Bullets who last season surrendered the league title for the first time after 5 back to back seasons have concentrated on bolstering their defense following the departures of defenders Gomezgani Chirwa and Nickson Nyasulu as well the uncertainty hovering on Alick Lungu’s future.
New head coach Peter Mponda has signed former Blue Eagles FC fullback Andrew Juvinala while another defender Blessings Joseph has joined from Chitipa United.
Chitipa United, who battled relegation in 2024, have strengthened both their defense and midfield as they aim to avoid another relegation struggle. Mafco has focused on bolstering their striking force in a bid to improve their attacking output this season.
2025 Season Projection
Looking ahead, the influx of new talent and reinforcements across various teams suggests a strong possibility of continued high-scoring games in the 2025 season. With increased competition and fresh faces on the pitch, fans can expect a thrilling set of matches, which could push the goal tally even higher than last season’s impressive total. However, the success of these new signings will depend on how quickly the teams gel and adapt to their new line-ups as the season unfolds.
